Will You Still Love Me Tomorrow?

Jeremiah 31:3 I have loved you with an everlasting love; therefore I have continued my faithfulness to you.

My husband and I recently had the opportunity to see the theatre production of Beautiful, a musical depicting the life of singer-songwriter Carole King. She had just released her Grammy- winning album, Tapestry, in the early 70s when Chip and I first met. So her music takes us (and I would guess many baby boomers), back to an era as iconic as the album.

Since we saw the play, one song seems to be lingering in my mind, “Will You Still Love Me Tomorrow?” I believe it taps into a universal question everyone who has ever known love, or hopes to know love, asks. Is this person worth my trust and devotion?

Given the fickle nature of the world, where momentary pleasure is overtaking anything permanent, it’s no wonder insecurity floods our culture. We’ve become obsessed with the fear of “missing out” so we move from one relationship to another to another. Our fixation on self- fulfillment may feel liberating at first, but self-love will never complete the longing for secure love. So we echo the lyrics, “will you love me forever?”

I believe God created us for so much more than an endless search for satisfaction. He wants us to know a love that lasts not only tomorrow, but the next day, the next month, the next year. He designed us for love that lasts forever.

Jeremiah 31 paints a clear picture of God’s never-ending love. It describes how God remains faithful, true and committed because of his love.  Even when Israel rejected him, God refused to reject them. In fact, he promised to help them rebuild their lives. To exchange their mourning for joy. Their despair for hope. And he did! No greater power exists on earth than God’s enduring love.

If you feel distant from God because of bad decisions, unmet expectations or even unbelief, don’t lose heart. He is nearer than you think. Let his love carry you, restore you, and use all the circumstances in your life for good. Let him lead you to something lasting, something real, something truly Beautiful.
