2 Corinthians 3:18 And we all, with unveiled face, beholding the glory of the Lord, are being transformed into the same image from one degree of glory to another. For this comes from the Lord who is the Spirit.
Most heresies contain a seed of truth. That’s what makes them attractive.
Like the progressive idea man is evolving to a higher plane of humanity. Adherents believe we humans, once removed from the restraints of religion, will develop into the “best version of ourselves.” Without the moral standards imposed especially by Christianity, people will discover their true selves. All conflicts among us will disappear once we embrace whatever the truth of the day serves up.
So how’s this idea of cultural evolution working out?
It seems to me the evidence shows more de-evolving than evolving. Unless you consider rampant lawlessness, homelessness and contempt for every value once held sacred as indicators of progress. If you think allowing men to play in women’s sports, even if it causes injury, signals the road to utopia…. And promoting children’s confusion over their gender…. And elevating the status of victimhood to dismiss consequences for bad behavior…. Then you have reason to keep “progressing.”
So what’s the hidden seed of truth in this heretical thinking? We humans are actually purposed to “evolve” into something higher, something more beautiful, something “more fit,” to use the evolutionists’ words.
Followers of Jesus are evolving into the best versions of who our Creator intended us to be. We are becoming like him, like “little Christs.” Scripture says we move from “glory to glory” because he lives in us. We grow in grace toward those we disagree with, rather than belittle them. We uphold the dignity of all people, even the unwanted and unproductive. Since the Truth lives in us, we walk with integrity, even when it’s inconvenient. We learn to forgive rather than clutch on to bitterness and resentment.
And we have hope. True hope, not the kind of elusive hope promised by the cultural evolutionists. As Paul writes in 2 Corinthians 4:16, “So we do not lose heart. Though our outer self is wasting away, our inner self is being renewed day by day.”
So my fellow “little Christs,” I hope you have a glimpse of the glorious person you are evolving into. Don’t listen to the culture’s empty promises.
