We Don’t Know What to Do

2 Chronicles 20:12 “For we are powerless against this great horde that is coming against us. We do not know what to do, but our eyes are on you.”

Have you experienced situations that throw you into a Lord I don’t know what to do but my eyes are on you mindset? The birth of Jesus describes a few.

Mary didn’t know how she, a virgin, could give birth to a child …but her eyes were on you.  Joseph didn’t know how he could father the Son of God…. but his eyes were on you. The Magi didn’t know how they would find the King of kings…but their eyes were on you.

They faced pretty big obstacles—impossible ones—if they relied on their own understanding. But they chose to listen to One voice, follow One call. And all the things of earth grew dim.

It reminds me of Jehoshaphat when he was king of Judah. A “great horde” of enemies was coming against the tiny nation. In his distress, Jehoshaphat cried out to God. What could they do against such a great army? They didn’t know what to do, but they kept their eyes on the one who did.  And he delivered them completely.

Nothing is impossible when we keep our eyes on God.

So how about you? For many of us, the Christmas season seems to intensify everything else. It’s not hard to feel a “great horde” of uncertainty threatening to undo us. Whatever you might be facing these days, I pray you will do what Mary, Joseph and the Magi did, what Jehoshaphat did. Cry out to God:

Oh Lord, I don’t know how to deal with this diagnosis…but my eyes are on you. Lord, I don’t know how I’m going to fix the leaking roof and shrinking bank account…but my eyes are on you. Lord, I don’t know how to help my wayward child, my uncaring spouse, my hurting friend…but my eyes are on you.

We remain powerless but we have access to the One we know as Wonderful Counselor, Almighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace. No better place to cast our eyes.
