Psalm 124:1-3 “if the Lord had not been on our side when people attacked us,
they would have swallowed us alive….”
Do you know the right man is on your side? Sometimes I think all of life is purposed to teach us that one unassailable truth.
Maybe you’re encountering new territory. Until now, you’ve gotten away with relying on yourself. But something is forcing you out of your comfort zone. What succeeded before no longer works. The devils chomping at your heel seem about to overpower you, and you see no alternative but defeat. You would be a goner were it not for this:
The right man is on your side.
Or maybe your heart is aching for a loved one who is making all the wrong decisions. You’ve tried talking. Warning. Threatening. Even begging. But your attempts to shed light prove as effective as convincing a four-year-old who hates vegetables to eat his broccoli. Your predicament would be utterly hopeless if not for this:
The right man is on your side.
Take it from someone who knew. David was no stranger to danger and despair. Time and time again, the leader of Israel’s army found himself outnumbered and out-equipped. He cried to God on every occasion and God never failed to deliver them. In Psalm 124 David recounts those victories and gives praise to the Lord who made a way of escape when escape looked impossible. Who provided safe haven when treacherous storms threatened to sweep them away. He knew their deliverance occurred because of this:
The right man was on their side.
Martin Luther wanted believers to know we never have to face life’s battles alone. We have a mighty fortress, a never-failing defense, a helper who causes the Prince of Darkness to shrink in fear. Words some of us may need to hear today.
Did we in our own strength confide,
Our striving would be losing;
Were not the right Man on our side,
The Man of God’s own choosing:
Dost ask who that may be?
Christ Jesus, it is He;
Lord Sabaoth, His name,
From age to age the same,
And He must win the battle.
So friend, no matter what you may be facing, never forget this powerful truth…. The right man is on your side.
