Amazing Intimacy

Luke 12:7 “Indeed, the very hairs of your head are all numbered. Don’t be afraid; you are worth more than many sparrows.”

It’s almost too outrageous to believe. Too profound to understand. Yet the Bible says it’s true. The Creator of the Universe, Maker of all that is and ever has been, concerns himself with the intricate details of our lives. He can even identify the number of hairs on our head! Clearly, he knows more about us than we know ourselves. This should address any fear we have as to whether our life holds significance. We have been called to relate—up close and personal—to the God who understands us and loves us.

But do we recognize him?

Oswald Chambers writes, “The things that make God dear to us are not so much His great big blessings as the tiny things because they show us His amazing intimacy with us.” I think we sometimes misappropriate those “tiny things” as coincidences, maybe even luck. We then miss the opportunity to cultivate the intimacy he desires.

The other day I took some fruit to a woman, who after a year in our country, remains foreign to both the culture and the language. She spends most of her days alone tending three small children while her husband works. Before I left her home, I asked (via Google Translate) if she needed anything. She indicated she could use some detergent. I immediately left in search of Tide pods. But a funny thing happened on my way to the grocery store. It struck me that I wasn’t just doing a “good deed.” God was allowing me to participate in showing someone his kindness.

It proved to be one of those “tiny things,” but the gratitude I felt was far from small. I was grateful I could help my friend, but even more grateful for the honor of being God’s vessel. God had designed a tailor-made circumstance to usher me into a deeper awareness of his love for both of us. It spoke to me of his amazing intimacy.

Don’t miss those tender moments, my friend. God wants to have an intimate relationship with you. He wants you to know you are “worth more than many sparrows.” Let him speak to you in the small crevices of life. Ask him to bring you in to his amazing intimacy.
